A Word from the President |
Welcome to the Kansas Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. KAMFT is a organization of Marriage and Family Therapists in Kansas from students of MFT to advanced clinicians, educators and leaders. KAMFT is also the state division of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. We endeavor to advocate for the needs and concerns of MFT’s in Kansas. The two primary activities of KAMFT are to support legislation relevant to the practice of Marriage and Family Therapy at both state and national level and to provide continuing education for practitioners.
We hope you will spend some time visiting this sight. If there is something we might add to this location that will better serve the MFT’s of Kansas, please feel free to contact us. If you have an interest in serving KAMFT, we are always eager for more volunteers.
On behalf of KAMFT, I am delighted to welcome you to the KAMFT website
Christopher M. Habben, Ph.D.

KAMFT in Washington, D.C. |
|
Each year, AAMFT conducts a leadership conference in Alexandria, Virginia for representatives from all the state and provincial divisions. A number of activities occur during the annual Spring conference. First, attendees have an opportunity to schedule appointments with congressional representatives and/or their staff to address issues to Marriage and Family Therapists. This year, Dr. Chris Habben, KAMFT President, and Jennifer Jay, KAMFT President-Elect, attended the conference and had appointments with the staff of House Representatives Boyda, Moore, Moran and Tiahart as well as Senator Brownback. At each visit, Habben and Jay addressed the six different Medicare Bills seeking support for inclusion of MFT's as providers and discussed the inclusion of MFT's in future changes to the No Child Left Behind law.
In addition to time spent on Capitol Hill, Habben and Jay had opportunities to attend a variety of sessions dedicated to improving state division activities and updating leaders of various responsibilities. The conference also provides many opportunities for contact with AAMFT Board Members as well as staff at the AAMFT Central Office. The conference concludes with meeting of the Council of Division Presidents. Both Habben and Jay found the conference very valuable for national legislative efforts, networking with other divisional leaders, training regarding administrating divisional activities and developing ideas for also improving services for KAMFT members.

2008 Legislative Session Ends |
|
The most current bill (Sub HB 2601) went further than our previous efforts to gain access to insurance reimbursement from all insurance companies in Kansas. The KAMFT Board would like to express our sincere appreciation for this progress to our attorney Ron Hein who continues to work tirelessly on our behalf. The Board would also like to thank our KAMFT members who have created greater awareness of MFT interests with the Legislature in Topeka.
Though the legislative term has now drawn to a close and the legislators have gone home, we would encourage everyone to continue contacting your legislators and express your interests for the 2009 legislative session.
See additional information about MFT federal and state legislative efforts under the "Legislation" tab above. Note the several opportunities for you to be involved at the grassroots level!
